Mitsubishi has officially confirmed the launch of a new body-on-frame SUV in 2026, effectively fueling rumors of a comeback for the legendary Pajero. According to 32CARS.RU, the brand's president announced the new model at the Tokyo Auto Salon, while Ralliart teasers and spy photos have revealed a vehicle with a boxy silhouette, a massive hood, and proportions reminiscent of classic Pajero generations. The project is being developed entirely by Mitsubishi. Contrary to earlier speculation, there will be no unification with the Nissan Patrol. Japanese publication BestCar reports that the foundation will be the frame of the current Triton pickup, featuring an upgraded suspension and the ability to adapt to challenging off-road conditions. The base engine is a 2.4-liter twin-turbo diesel producing 201 horsepower and 470 Nm of torque. A plug-in hybrid system from the Outlander PHEV is also under consideration, with a two-motor setup, a 2.4-liter gasoline engine, and a combined output of around 248 horsepower, though this system may be enhanced for the heavier Pajero. The estimated price in the Japanese market is 5.5 to 7.5 million yen (35,000 to 47,000 dollars), while international versions are expected to be significantly more expensive. This new model is positioned as a direct competitor to the Toyota Land Cruiser 250, maintaining classic off-road capabilities and distinguishing itself from Mitsubishi's crossover lineup.
