Hyundai has announced a recall of 51,587 vehicles in the United States over a potential fire risk. Reuters, citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reports that the issue involves the trailer-tow wiring: improper installation of the wiring harness can cause a short circuit in the circuit when trailer lights are inoperative. In the worst case, that could increase the likelihood of a fire.

Until repairs are completed, regulators advise owners to park the vehicle outside and away from buildings and other structures. The remedy is straightforward but essential: dealers will replace the trailer wiring harness at no charge.

Situations like this underline how so-called “minor” electrical faults can have major safety implications, especially in the season of long trips and towing. If your Hyundai has a trailer package installed, it’s worth running a quick VIN check and scheduling a dealer visit without delay.
